Defeating Your Inner Demons: Passage 1 – Introduction

A faceless, hooded figure.

What do I mean by defeat your inner demons? Depends on what manner of demon you have. If a vice can be overcome forever, it means striving for that until you reach the goal. However, most inner demons cannot be permanently overcome. These hooded, hidden creatures of the mind and heart cannot be destroyed, only have their power weakened. What you can do is learn to be at peace with them while still striving for a better life than they would give you.

Two of my own personal demons possess well-known names. Bipolar Type 1 and Borderline Personality Disorder. In past years, these two often conspired to make my life unlivable. I lost friendships and even a marriage thanks to my demons and the demons of others. Through my observations, I learned one invaluable lesson. These figures in my mind can be uncloaked, understood, and they do not own my life. So why am I telling you all this? A few reasons:

  1. My experience is often lonely, painfully so. I want someone else to see what I’ve been through and say, “Hey, I can do this too. I’m not alone.”
  2. My experiences can help you or someone else in some way. Aid may be as small as giving someone a reason to make the leap, and that is enough for me.
  3. I can’t keep myself from writing about these experiences. So this series begins.

I will delve into what makes me tick as a person. In doing so I hope to show you, my reader, that peace can be had in the midst of the storm. In that light, I ask, how can I help? What demons aside from my own would you like me to address and why? Let me know in the comments. I read them all and will respond to as many as I can.
